Blackout lining stops light getting through the fabric, it won't stop light coming in round the edges. Here we also have covered fascia, this type of small shallow pelmet serves the function of helping to block the gap at the top of the curtains and help reduce lightwash onto the ceiling. Often it can be this intense lightwash onto a white ceiling that wakes some people in the summer months. Can also be useful if you have street lights outside your window
